Unknown. Possibly borrowed from Ottoman Turkish قفا (compare Turkish kafa (“head”)), from Arabic قَفَاء (qafāʔ, “back of the neck”). However, the term is seen first in Buzuku's writings in 1555, and is present in the Arbëresh dialect as well, which usually does not have Turkish loans.
