Zen
Sanskrit dhyāna, 'meditation', was transcribed in Chinese as chánnà, shortened to chán, read seon in Korea, thiền in Vietnam and zen in Japan, and reached English as the name of a school; Beat-era America and 1970s France then turned it into a word for calm.
