Zachary goes back to Zechariah, 'Yah has remembered'. In the Qur'an he is Zakariyyā, the father of John the Baptist, a name carried to Persia and Turkey and, as Zakaria, to Swahili and Malay. Christian Europe made it Zacharie, Zacarías, Zachariasz and Finnish Sakari, Georgia Zakaria, and Old Russian wore him down to Zakhar.
