yogurt

A Turkic word probably related to a verb for 'thicken, knead', yogurt is recorded in an 11th-century Turkic dictionary and reached English through travellers in the Ottoman Empire; from the Balkans it spread across Europe in the 1900s yogurt health craze and on to Japan and America.
