tsunami
Tsunami is 'harbour wave', named by fishermen who came home to find their harbours wrecked by a wave they never felt at sea. English adopted it to replace the misleading 'tidal wave'; the 1946 Hawaii and 1952 Kuril disasters made it the scientists' word, and the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 put it into Tamil, Sinhala, Thai, Hindi and nearly every other language overnight.
