tiger
Greek tígris is an Iranian word; ancient writers said it meant 'arrow' in Median, the same word as the swift river Tigris, and the Avestan tiγri- 'arrow' supports them, though the link is not proven. Greek and Latin spread the name to Slavic, Romance and Germanic Europe, and Spanish settlers gave it to the jaguar of the Americas.
