Names
Thomas
Thomas was not really a name at first. It was the Aramaic word for 'twin', the apostle's nickname, which the Gospel of John translates into Greek as Didymos. Syriac Christians took it as far as India's 'St Thomas Christians', and through Latin it became a top medieval English name, the Scots Tam and the British soldier's 'Tommy', as well as Irish Tomás, Russian Foma, Tomasz, Tamás, Tuomas, Christian Arabic Tūmā, Chinese Duōmǎ and Māori Tāmati.
