tempura

Batter-frying reached Nagasaki with the Portuguese in the 16th century, and so did the name: Japanese dictionaries derive tempura from Portuguese tempero 'seasoning', while a rival story points to têmpora, the Ember Days when Catholics ate fish. From Japan it went on to Korean streets as denppura and to Taiwan as tianbula fish cake.
