syrup

Arabic sharāb 'a drink' came to Europe with Arab medicine as the sweet syrup of the medieval pharmacy, and Dutch carried siroop to Java and Japan; eastward the same word became 'wine' in Persian and Turkish and 'liquor' in Hindi, and in Mexico jarabe became a dance. Syrup, sherbet and sorbet all come from the same Arabic root, š-r-b 'to drink'.
