sumac
Syriac summāqā 'red' named the shrub whose dark red berries and leaves were used for tanning, dyeing and seasoning; Arabic summāq passed it to Persian, Turkish, Spanish and Medieval Latin, English had it by 1300, and colonists gave the name to American shrubs, poison sumac included.
