soy
Soy is a clipped Japanese shōyu, 'bean-paste oil', heard by Dutch traders at Nagasaki in the Kyushu pronunciation soi; the bean was named after the sauce, not the other way round. Dutch soja went on to German, French, Spanish, Russian and Portuguese — and to Brazil, now the world's biggest soybean grower.
