soju

Distilling came to Korea with the Mongols in the 13th century, and so did the name: soju is the Korean reading of Chinese 燒酒 'burnt (distilled) liquor', the same word as Japanese shōchū. Korean restaurants made soju a fixture of American cities, where it has its own legal niche.
