shiitake

Shiitake is simply 'shii-tree mushroom': it grows on logs of the shii, an evergreen chinquapin, and English took the name in 1877, the year the fungus got its scientific description. Japanese growers took the mushroom and the name to Brazil, and the 1980s health-food trade spread it through Europe.
