Scripture

scapegoat

Leviticus sends one goat 'for ʿĂzāʾzēl' into the wilderness; Jerome and then Tyndale read the name as ʿēz ʾōzēl, 'the goat that goes away', and Tyndale coined 'scapegoat' — a translation of a misreading, not a borrowing. The Latin caper emissarius was translated again into French bouc émissaire, Italian capro espiatorio and Spanish chivo expiatorio, while Japanese simply borrowed the English word.
