sahib
Arabic ṣāḥib 'companion' (also a Companion of the Prophet) also meant 'owner, master'; through Persian it became the Hindustani form of address 'sir, master', which English heard in India from the 1670s, especially for Europeans. It is also Turkish sahip 'owner', Swahili sahibu 'friend' and the Sikh honorific of the Guru Granth Sahib.
