saga
Icelandic saga, 'something said, a story', named the great prose histories of medieval Iceland; antiquarians brought it into English in the 18th century, and from there it reached French, Spanish, Russian and Japanese fantasy. Its native cousins are English saw, 'a saying', and German Sage, 'legend'.
