rune
Proto-Germanic *rūnō meant 'secret, mystery': Gothic used it for the mysteries of the Gospel and Finnish borrowed it as runo, 'poem'. Old English had its own rūn, but it died out; the modern word was revived from Scandinavian scholars writing in Latin about runic inscriptions, and spread from them to German, French and Russian.
