Names
Rachel
Rachel, Jacob's beloved wife, has a plain pastoral name: rāḥēl, 'ewe'. Jews used it all through the Middle Ages, but English Christians took it up only after the Reformation, after a century of Bibles that printed 'Rahel'. It lives on as Rokhl, Raquel, Rakel, Ráhel, Russian Rakhil', Japanese Rakeru and Tongan Lesieli.
