Punch was the East India Company men's 'five' drink: Hindi pāñc from Sanskrit pañca, for its five ingredients (spirit, water, sugar, lime and spice); it is cousin to 'Punjab', the land of five rivers. English sailors spread the punch bowl round the world: Swedish punsch, German Punsch, Russian punsh, Mexican ponche and Japanese fruits ponchi.
