priest

Priest is a squeezed form of Greek presbýteros 'elder', the title of senior members of the early Christian communities. Worn down in different ways, the same word became French prêtre, Romanian preot, German Priester, Swedish präst and, through a famous Irish sound change, Old Irish cruimther.
