pepper
Pepper is one of the oldest Indian words in Europe: Greek péperi came from an Indic name like Sanskrit pippalī 'long pepper', and Latin piper reached the Germanic, Celtic and Slavic languages before English was written. Eastward, Persian pilpil became Hebrew pilpel, Arabic filfil and Swahili pilipili, which the Portuguese turned into piri-piri.
