nirvana
Sanskrit nirvāṇa means 'blown out', like a flame; for Buddhists it is the extinction of desire and suffering. Pali nibbāna went south and east to Sri Lanka, Burma and Thailand, Chinese transcribed it for Korea, Japan and Vietnam, and only in 1836 did it reach English — later the name of a Seattle band.
