myrrh

Myrrh is named for its bitter taste. Semitic murr- 'bitter' (Hebrew mōr, Arabic murr) became Greek mýrrha, and Latin carried it into English and the Romance and Germanic languages as one of the gifts of the Magi; the Greek variant smýrna gave Russian smirna.
