mosque
Arabic masjid, 'place of prostration', came to Europe by way of Spain as mezquita, then passed through Italian and French; English mangled it for three centuries (muskey, moseak, mosquee) before settling on 'mosque' in the 1700s. Eastward, masjid itself went to Persian, Hindi, Malay and Swahili, and Tatar mächet gave Russian mechet'.
