Scripture

messiah

'The anointed one', the title of Israel's kings and priests and then of the hoped-for deliverer. Greek both borrowed it (Messias) and translated it (Christos, Christ), and Arabic al-Masīḥ carried it on to Persian, Turkish, Hindi, Swahili and Malay.
