The story you may have heardA popular story says French soldiers picked up Arabic massa in Egypt during Napoleon's campaign (1798–1801), and Etymonline mentions it as a guess. The dates rule it out: masser is in print by 1779, in a book about the Indian Ocean. Even the Arabic source is only one of two serious candidates, the other being Portuguese amassar.
