mammoth
Russians in Siberia dug up 'mammont' tusks and bones, probably naming them with a Mansi word for 'earth horn'; Dutch and German travel books and a 1696 Russian grammar brought the word west, and American English made mammoth an adjective for anything huge. From there it reached French, Spanish, Hebrew, Japanese and Korean.
