leotard
Jules Léotard, the French acrobat who invented the flying trapeze, performed in a tight one-piece costume. He called it a maillot, but English named the garment after him in 1886, sixteen years after he died — and English passed the name on to Spanish, where leotardos are tights, and to Japanese gymnastics.
