From names to words
lazaretto
Lazarus, the sore-covered beggar of Jesus' parable, made 'lazar' mean 'leper' — and Venice's plague hospitals, the lazzaretti, carried the name across Europe and on to Philadelphia and Queensland: a quarantine station in English, a military hospital in German and Russian, an ordinary hospital in Swedish, and, via 'leper', a miser in French.
