Friedrich Fröbel named his school for small children a 'children's garden' in 1840, where they would grow like plants. German émigrés carried the word itself to Britain and America, while dozens of languages translated it — jardin d'enfants, detskiy sad, børnehave, lastentarha, gan yeladim, jardín de niños.
