Yōsēp̄, 'may he (God) add', was the name of Jacob's favourite son and of Mary's husband. Through the Qur'an's Sura Yusuf it became one of the commonest Muslim names from Morocco to Malaysia (Swahili Yusufu); through the Bible it became Giuseppe, José (in Brazil, plain Zé), Józef, Hungarian József, Russian Iosif and Osip, and Ioseb — Stalin's Georgian name.
