Names
John
Hebrew Yōḥānān, 'Yahweh has been gracious', named John the Baptist and the apostle John and became the most-scattered name in Christendom: Jean, Juan (the Filipino everyman), Giovanni, Hans, Ivan, Jan, Ioane, Yohannes and Hovhannes. Celtic forms came back into English as Ian, Evan and Shane, and missionaries carried it to Hawaii and New Zealand as Keoni and Hone and to Chinese Yuēhàn and Japanese Yohane. Arabic Yaḥyā may or may not be the same name.
