Jesus
Yēšūaʿ, a short form of Yəhōšuaʿ ('Joshua'), was a common Jewish name. Greek, which had no 'sh', made it Iēsous, and every Christian language followed — Iesus, Old Irish Íssu, Jésus, Gesù, Iisus, Iyasus, Mexican Chuy — while Syriac missionaries took Yišoʿ to Tang China and Jesuits brought Yēsū to later China and Iesu to Japan. Arabic has both Yasūʿ and the Qur'anic ʿĪsā (Persian and Hindi ʿĪsā), and where ʿĪsā comes from is still debated.
