jasper

The stone name jasper reached Greek from the Near East. Amarna Akkadian yašpû and Hebrew yāšəp̄ē are its closest relatives, but the ultimate source (Semitic, Egyptian or Iranian) is unclear; from Greek and Latin it went to Armenian, Slavonic and every Romance language.
