janissary

The Ottoman sultans' elite infantry were the yeñiçeri, 'new soldiers'; Italian giannizzero carried the name to the rest of Europe and English in the early 1500s, while Slavs, Greeks and Hungarians who fought them took it straight from Turkish. In Spanish New Mexico, genízaro came to mean a ransomed Native captive.
