Latin intellegentia 'understanding' gave English intelligence through French, and was revived in partitioned Poland as inteligencja, a name for the educated class that felt responsible for the nation. Russian borrowed it, and from Russian it went to English, Yiddish, Hebrew, Bulgarian and Japanese, where it was clipped to interi.
