hussar

Medieval Latin cursarius, a raider, became Italian corsaro (and so English corsair) and then Serbian gusar, 'pirate'; Hungary turned it into huszár, its light cavalryman, and the name rode across Europe with the winged hussars of Poland and the hussar regiments of France, Prussia and Russia.
