hummus

Hummus is simply Arabic for 'chickpeas'; the dip is ḥummuṣ bi-ṭaḥīna, 'chickpeas with tahini'. Hebrew took the short name for both the legume and the dish, and English, which had used it for the legume since the 1850s, took it for the Levantine dip in the mid-20th century.
