howitzer
German Haufe, 'heap', became Czech houf, 'crowd', and the Hussites' houfnice, a gun for firing into crowds; German borrowed it back as Haubitze, and passed it to Dutch (and so English), Swedish, Polish and Russian — and to French, where it became obus, the shell.
