Scripture

hosanna

Originally a plea — 'save us, please!' from Psalm 118 — that the crowds shouted at Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, after which the Church heard it as a shout of praise; Jews kept it as the Hoshana prayers of Sukkot, and Arabic Christians still call Palm Sunday 'the hosannas'.
