hashish

Arabic ḥashīsh meant 'dry herb, hay' before it became a 13th-century nickname for cannabis; an English traveller recorded it in Egypt in 1598, but it stayed rare until 19th-century Paris's Club des Hashischins and Napoleon's Egypt veterans spread it across Europe.
