haiku
Haiku is a 19th-century telescoping of haikai no ku, 'verse of comic linked poetry'; the poet Masaoka Shiki gave the stand-alone opening verse its new name, and English borrowed it in 1902. French poets wrote haïkaï from 1905, Tablada in Mexico and Afrânio Peixoto in Brazil took the form to Latin America, and China, Korea and Russia read it in their own ways.
