ginseng
Ginseng is Hokkien jîn-sim, 'man root', for its forked, body-shaped root; Europeans heard it in the southern ports. Korea, Japan and Vietnam had read the characters for centuries, a Jesuit letter of 1711 sent French missionaries hunting for it in Canada, and American ginseng was on the first US ship to China.
