falafel

Falafel is an Arabic plural, falāfil, of filfil 'pepper', a spice word that came from Sanskrit pippalī through Persian. The fried bean balls are first recorded in 19th-century Egypt; Hebrew took the word along with the Levantine chickpea version, and English took the name in 1936.
