Emmanuel

Emmanuel is a short Hebrew sentence, 'God (is) with us', from Isaiah's prophecy. Shortened to Manuel, it was an Armenian and Byzantine name by the 4th–7th centuries, and Greeks still say Manolis. A Castilian prince named in honour of his Byzantine ancestry brought it to Spain, from where it reached Mexico and the Philippines; Portugal and Brazil took it up too, and Germans kept Hebrew-style Immanuel.
