Elijah
ʾĒliyyāhū, 'my God is Yahweh', is a one-line creed. English knew him as Wycliffe's Elie and then Coverdale's Elias, until the Geneva Bible of 1560 brought back the Hebrew shape as Eliiah, later Elijah. The Greek form with its -s spread to Russian Ilya, Georgian Elia, Hungarian Illés, Ethiopian ʾElyas and Arabic Ilyās, which Islam carried to Turkey, Malaysia and the Tatars.
