Dutch painters called the stand that carried their canvas an ezel, a 'donkey' — the same joke as English sawhorse. The donkey word itself goes back to Latin asellus, which the Goths, Germans and English all borrowed, and which Gothic passed on to the Slavs as osel, osioł and osyol.
