Silver coins minted from 1519 at Joachimsthal ('Joachim's valley') in Bohemia were called Joachimsthaler, soon just Taler; the name went to Sweden, Italy, Russia and Slovenia, and through Dutch daler reached English and finally the American currency. The US dollar then gave the word to Japanese, Russian, Arabic, Swahili, Tagalog and Samoan, which sent tala back to English.
