divan
Persian dēwān, an archive or register, became the Arabic and Ottoman word for a government office and its council chamber, then for the cushioned bench along its walls, and through Italian dogana for the customs house (douane, aduana). It is also a poet's collected works, a Mughal minister, a Malaysian parliament and the Russian sofa.
