dengue
The fever's name is usually traced to Swahili ki-dinga pepo, 'a cramp-like seizure caused by a spirit', reshaped in the Caribbean into Spanish dengue, 'fussiness'; medicine then carried the word to every tropical country, from Brazil to Japan, China and India.
